What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? James 4:1
Our desires are a very vital part of our lives. But desires must be made distinctions of. There are fleshy or worldly or canal desire and there are spiritual or godly— but I prefer to use the word Christ magnifying desires. I wouldn't be magnifying Christ if I desire, for instance, to have a scholarship so as to look good and feed my ego with the reverence of my friends. We know that to desire a scholarship isn't evil in itself, but the motivating factor or idea or intention behind getting a scholarship could be unimaginably evil. Rather, would it hurt to desire a scholarship to be educated in a discipline and to have one single underlying goal of magnifying Christ in it? No.
Our passions are at war within us. One would desire to have what someone else has, the other would desire to be in the same position, in the same favour or enjoying the same blessing that another is currently enjoying. So when we don't have them, we may fall into self-pity, and then into pride, and then we hate and we contend, and we have no rest for our souls and we're not able to really love our neighbors...hence, our feelings and desires open up a canker warm of sin!
If we're going to live peaceably with everyone, we must be at war with our flesh. We must suppress its attacks and frustrate its strategies. But first, we must be trained and prepared everyday by the words of God. This way, we'll find strength and grace in the battle that's before us—battle to wage war against sin.
