New York City is always alive! It’s loud, it’s busy, it’s bustling and it’s chaotic by most people’s standards.
So when I arrived here last night and was waiting on the curb to be picked up at JFK airport, I felt the full effect of that chaos - with traffic officers blowing their whistles over and over, cars tooting, sometimes courteously and sometimes aggressively, the warm Summer weather creating all the smells of long haul travellers, and a visual mess of cars and lights cutting across lanes to pick up their family and friends.
And so I had to choose...to either get worked up by the frantic assault on my senses, or to calm the mind through mindfulness and a gratitude meditation and just be truly present in the moment. To take in every detail, to see, hear, smell, touch and taste that very moment in time.
And that’s how I found calm in that chaos... and it’s something we can all do when we need to. Instead of reacting angrily to the vibe around me, I became acutely aware of what was happening around me and that gave me a sense of empathy for others which brought me to a place of gratitude. Next time things feel chaotic for you, calm the mind through noticing every detail of what’s happening around you. It really works. 🙏
